Whether you are recruiting a Finance Director or a bookkeeper, you will be entrusting your most confidential affairs to them and relying on them to provide you with the information to make your business a success.
They may be qualified or have years of experience but are they right for the job? To help you, the first step is to evaluate just what skills and capabilities you need. To what extent do you want them to take over from your external accountants? Will their scope go beyond finance, maybe to HR or IT?
In my experience, most job specs are not sufficiently tailored to the role and often seek find the perfect super accountant rather than focusing on the key skill and attributes needed for the role.
To give you an idea, have a look at ‘Who’s in your finance team’.
So, let’s assume we have worked out exactly what you need, have advertised the role and are now inundated with CVs. The next question is can you assume that they can do what they say on their CV.
The answer is absolutely not! Having spent years testing candidates for accounting roles, I have experienced many situations where the person simply doesn’t live up to the CV.
Sometimes, it is a matter of interpretation. They say they are an advanced user of Excel but have only formed this judgement on the extent to which they have used the programme. They say they produced forecast models and neglect to say that one of their team actually did the work. They say they were responsible for producing financial statements and omit that their auditors did most of the heavy lifting.
I have seen the impact of a lack of competence in the finance team and it really can be devastating.
